In the club’s 15th charity project, Snapp cooperates with the charity “Supporting Children with Benchmark Cancer” in a project entitled “Participation in Funding the Costs of Stem Cell Sampling”
According to the Iran digital economy annotation, The purpose of implementing this project is to contribute to the cost of sampling stem cells for the treatment of children with cancer, which is done in cooperation with the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Subscription Center. Currently, each HLA registration including sampling and stem cell tests costs about 850,000 Tomans. By implementing this plan and providing the cost of registering at least a thousand samples of volunteers’ stem cells, in addition to increasing the probability of finding a compatible sample, the path to joining international stem cell banks is also paved.
Stem cell transplant, a life-giving transplant
Transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells is one of the most important ways to treat cancer, especially children’s cancer. For this reason, donating the sample of these cells increases the probability of finding a compatible sample for people who need a bone marrow transplant.
At best, only 25% of people can receive stem cells from their parents or close relatives. This issue makes subscription centers to receive samples from centers abroad. In this method, which has a high cost, the matching of samples is not necessary.
The Hematopoietic Stem Cell Subscription Center was launched in August 2017 . This center is the first non-governmental underwriting center in Iran and currently the third hematopoietic stem cell underwriting center in the country.
Dr. Mansoure Haghighi, the director of Mahak’s hematopoietic stem cell subscription center, says: “After six years have passed since the establishment of the hematopoietic stem cell subscription center, more than 11,600 samples were registered with the aim of not needing them from abroad, and so far more than 820 donated samples have been matched with patients in need of transplants in the country and even other countries.”
Transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells (blood progenitor cells that can become mature blood cells) is one of the ways used to treat various diseases, including cancer. In this treatment process, the type of histocompatibility genes, which is called HLA, is determined for the volunteer and its information is stored in the HLA bank of the subscription center.
When a patient needs a bone marrow transplant, the compatibility of the registered genes available in this center with the patient needing a transplant is checked, and in case of compatibility, hematopoietic stem cells are transferred from the donor to the patient with new less invasive methods. Volunteers to donate stem cells can register their HLA typing for free by visiting the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Registration Center.
How to participate in Snapp’s charity plan
As the public relations of Snapp says, users of this application can participate in this good work without paying any amount and only with their Snapp Club points. To participate in this project, users can enter Snappclub from the main page of the super application and then the charity section and select the desired project. For every 2,000 users’ points, Snapp contributes 4,000 Tomans to cover the costs of testing and registering stem cell samples.
In this project, by providing the cost of registering at least a thousand stem cell samples, while giving patients access to more samples and increasing the probability of finding a compatible sample, it will help to add another 5 thousand samples to the benchmark stem cell bank and connect it to international stem cell donation banks.
