According to the vice president of new technologies of the central bank, contactless payment with NFC technology has been launched in 5 banks.
According to Iran digital economy annotation, the vice president of new technologies of the Central Bank announced: “The customers of the banking network can make their payments through their mobile phones and bring them close to POS devices, without using a password.”
“Mehran Moharamian” announced: “One of the most important actions of the Central Bank this year is the completion of the NFC-based payments project (Kahroba Project) that was unveiled in 1399 and the cooperation of banks was needed to present it to the people.”
He added: “Currently, 5 Bank’s cards are connected to the “Kahroba” project, and customers of the banking network can make their payments through mobile phones and by bringing them close to POS devices, without using a password, with easier and more secure use.”
Moharamian also said: “With the implementation of this project and the physical removal of bank cards, the number of frauds through access to people’s bank card information will decrease significantly.”
In Mehr last year, “Mohammedreza Maniyekta”, the head of the central bank’s payment systems supervision department, said, “The plan of the mobile smart card (Kahroba) which is known as face-to-face transactions without a card, aims to improve the security standards of the country’s payment network for up to two months. The future will be ready to serve the people.” At that time, he had announced that 9 banks in the country’s banking network had implemented all the necessary changes for the implementation of the Amber project. But now it is clear that despite the readiness of 9 banks, only 5 banks have joined this project.
According to Maniyekta, in Mehr 1402, out of 12 payment companies, 8 companies activated these capacities and 70 thousand store terminals had the capacity to perform contactless transactions through mobile applications. In addition, 2 smart mobile phone programs have been activated and are ready to serve the people.
The central bank has not yet announced a schedule and a clear vision for the removal of bank cards. Also, for such a program to be implemented, while all the banks and POS devices are ready, the mobile phones of the subscribers must also be able to use NFC technology.
According to global statistics for 2020, more than 20% of the world’s population has access to NFC technology. Also, according to the Gartner report, 80% of mobile phones in the world will be smart phones equipped with NFC technology by 2025.
