Iran’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Eisa Zarepour, stated that as of now, there is no foreign tourist SIM card available in the country. He made this announcement during a government meeting where he discussed various aspects of Iran’s telecommunications and technology initiatives.
Eisa Zarepour Discusses Telecom Developments, Fiber Optic Expansion, and Space Exploration Plans
According to IDEA, Zarepour emphasized that anyone entering Iran can use roaming services provided by Iranian operators, as they have contracts with over 250 international operators. This allows tourists to activate internet services from their home countries while in Iran.
The provision of unfiltered SIM cards to foreign tourists was initially proposed by the Minister of Tourism last year. Ali Asghar Shalbafian, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, announced that these unfiltered SIM cards would be made available to foreign tourists through travel agencies, hotels, and tourist guides after approval by the Committee for Determining Instances of Criminal Content.
Zarepour also provided updates on Iran’s fiber optic project, stating that work has commenced in more than 150 cities, with approximately 70 cities having completed the installation. Additionally, preparations have been made in 500 cities to implement this high-speed internet infrastructure.
Regarding households covered by fiber optic networks, Zarepour mentioned that nearly four million households are currently connected. He added that those interested in connecting to fiber optic services have the opportunity to do so. This number is expected to reach eight million households by the end of the year.
Iran’s average fixed communication speed currently stands at 12 megabits per second. However, with fiber optic connections, speeds of approximately 900 megabits per second are achievable, representing a substantial increase in internet speed.
Zarepour highlighted that the first province set to benefit from complete fiber optic coverage is Golestan Province, with implementation expected within the next month.
The Minister also discussed upcoming space programs, mentioning the upcoming launch of a life capsule for space testing within the next two months. He described the life capsule as a protective structure for astronauts or living organisms that will orbit the Earth or be stationed at space stations. Initial tests for this capsule are currently underway. Iran aims to have its own Iranian astronaut in space within the next five years.
These developments in telecommunications, technology, and space exploration signify Iran’s commitment to advancing its capabilities in these critical areas.
