New Legislation Aims to Bolster Cyber Resilience and Reduce Vulnerability of Executive Agencies.
Strengthening Iran’s Cybersecurity: New Measures to Protect National Assets
According to IDEA, In line with Iran’s Seventh Development Plan, the parliament has approved new cybersecurity measures, tasking the Ministry of Communications with evaluating executive agencies’ cybersecurity. The goal is to strengthen infrastructure, enhance cyber resilience, and reduce national asset vulnerability.
The legislation obligates the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, in coordination with other government bodies, to provide cybersecurity services and annually rank the cybersecurity of executive agencies. This effort will be executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Intelligence, the Intelligence Organization of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, and the Passive Defense Organization.
The Ministry of Communications is required to annually rank executive agencies’ cybersecurity based on standards and regulations set by the Permanent Committee of Non-Military Passive Defense, promulgated by the Supreme Council of Cyberspace.
These actions align with the Seventh Development Plan’s policies, aiming to strengthen infrastructure, optimize public and governmental mechanisms, safeguard national interests, enhance resilience, and reduce vulnerability in infrastructure and national assets against threats like cyberattacks, biological, chemical, radiological, electromagnetic, and military threats.
Brigadier General Gholamreza Jalali, head of the Passive Defense Organization, revealed that they thwarted 10 major cyberattacks in the past year with the help of the Ministry of Intelligence and the Revolutionary Guard Corps. Many attacks were attributed to simple issues, which were addressed through education.
In response to cybersecurity vulnerabilities, domestic products were developed through collaboration with knowledge-based companies and the Ministry of Defense. These products successfully repelled 80% of last year’s cyberattacks.
