For a year, Zarepour has been using the phrase “we are investigating” in response to every question about the increase in internet prices
According to the Iran digital economy annotation, The Minister of Communications, in response to the recent letter of the operators to increase the Internet tariff, said that they have not yet made a decision on this matter and are considering it. For a year, Zarepour has been using the phrase “we are investigating” in response to every question about the increase in internet prices.
Eisa Zarepour, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, stated about the operators’ request to increase the Internet tariff: “No decision has been made on this matter yet, but our red line is quality; “Anything that causes a decrease in quality, we will definitely take care of it.”
According to him, the operators’ argument is that they cannot develop their services with the current tariff: “We are currently investigating this issue.”
It has been almost a year since Zarepour stated that they are considering it in response to the question of changing the internet tariff. For example, in May of this year, on the sidelines of the government board meeting, he said that the issue of internet price increase is being investigated.
It should be noted that at the beginning of the week, mobile and fixed internet operators sent a letter to the president asking for a 100% increase in the tariff of mobile internet packages above 2 gigabytes.
The operators complained about the non-increase of the internet tariff in the last 5 years and demanded to change the tariffs. Stating that the ratio of Internet tariff to purchasing power in neighboring countries is several times higher in Iran, they officially asked the president to increase the tariff of mobile data packages above two gigabytes by 100%.
According to the operators, half of the people, including low-income groups, have a monthly consumption of less than two gigabytes per month for mobile data services. They have also informed the president that if they agree to increase the tariff, in order to support the less privileged classes, it is possible to provide free and cheap packages for this class of users with the coordination and management of the honorable government.
