Abolhassan Firouzabadi, former head of the National Cyberspace Center, spoke at a ceremony commemorating the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).
Honoring Artificial Intelligence: A Focus on the New Frontier in Technology
According to IDEA, Firouzabadi emphasized how AI has transitioned from a niche area of competition among superpowers to becoming the focal point of competition across various technological domains.
Firouzabadi stated that investing in AI is more cost-effective compared to other industries such as semiconductors. He highlighted the significance of the manufacturing sector in nanoelectronics, an area that he believes receives less attention despite its pivotal role.
He explained, “The manufacturing sector in the field of nanoelectronics is of great importance. In Iran, we often overlook this sector when it is essential to have the necessary prerequisites for the semiconductor industry.”
Abolhassan Firouzabadi, Former Head of the National Cyberspace Center, Discusses AI’s Growing Role in Various Sectors
Firouzabadi stressed the critical importance of infrastructure, especially when AI serves as a vital technology that generates soft power at the national level. He mentioned that AI is currently utilized in various sectors, including social, educational, financial, and military. In all these domains, it exhibits a form of capability that cannot be easily replicated by humans or other methods.
Comparing the focus on software and AI in today’s world to the development of factories and industries during the era of modernization, Firouzabadi underlined the unique significance of AI in our contemporary world. He said, “Usually, in developed and developing countries, there is a strong focus on artificial intelligence, and we hope that this emphasis will continue in our country regardless of recent concerns raised about it. While AI can be a source of concern, I believe that we are currently in a period where we should focus on its development.”
He concluded by highlighting the scarcity of experts and the underutilization of AI among middle and senior managers in various political, social, and economic fields in both developing and developed countries as the main obstacles to AI development in the world. He added, “The first problem lies beyond our control. We cannot fundamentally advance technology because it requires heavy investments. However, addressing the second and third issues—developing a pool of knowledgeable experts and raising the level of expertise among managers—is something we can work on.”
Firouzabadi’s remarks underscored the importance of embracing AI technologies and the need to enhance educational and professional resources to maximize their potential in Iran and around the world.
